Meaning and StructureAldershot Ashgate 2001 In this book (which is a reworked English version of my Czech 'Význam a struktura') I argue that recent and contemporary (post)analytic philosophy, as developed by Quine, Davidson, Sellars and Brandom, is largely structuralistic in the very sense in which structuralism was originally tabled by de Saussure. I reconstruct de Saussure's view of language, link it to modern formal logic and mathematics and reveal close analogies between its constitutive principles and the principles informing the holistic and neopragmatistic view of language put forward by Quine & comp. I also indicate that this view of language is not incompatible with formal approaches to semantics. |

Doing Worlds with WordsKluwer Dordrecht 1995 In this book I try to throw light on the problem of meaning and critically asses the possibilities and limitations of elucidating the nature of meaning by means of formal logic , model theory and model-theoretical semantics. The main thrust of the book is to show that it is misguided to undestand model theory metaphysically and so to try to base formal semantics on formal metaphysis; I rather urge that model-theoretical tools of analysing language should be seen as means of envisaging a semantically relevant, especially inferential structure of language. |

Meaning: the Dynamic TurnOxford Elsevier 2003 A collection of essays addressing what can be called the 'dynamic turn' and what has been undergone by many theories of formal semantics of natural language in recent decades. Based on a conference held in Prague in September 2001, the book consists of papers addressing, from various sides, the foundational questions of the dynamic theories of meaning. It includes contributions of writers who are commonly held as authorities concerning the turn, who, however, here concentrate more on the why's than on the how's of dynamic semantics. |

Truth and its natureKluwer Dordrecht 1999 The book draws together contributions from analytic philosophers who analyse the concept of truth within the context established by the results of Alfred Tarski. The main focus of the majority of the contributions is on the recent debate between the 'deflationist' denigration of truth and 'inflationists' who insist that truth is a crucially deep and substantial concept. |
